Our Yorkshire Rose

gold yorkshire rose necklace
As a Yorkshire family born and bred, our Yorkshire Rose design is one of William and Julia’s earliest creations.
Although a white rose has long been a symbol of purity, innocence and glory, the symbol of the Yorkshire Rose as we know it originated in the 14th Century. A white heraldic rose was adopted as the emblem for the powerful House of York by its first Duke Edmund of Langley, while the red rose was adopted by his elder brother John of Gaunt, the first Duke of Lancaster. Their descendants fought violently for power and the throne of England during several decades of civil war known as the Wars of the Roses. Ultimately the two roses were combined by the victorious Tudor dynasty creating the Tudor Rose, a lasting symbol of the English Monarchy.
The Yorkshire Rose also has it’s own annual celebration on Yorkshire Day, the 1st August. This tradition originated at the Battle of Minden in Prussia on 1st August 1759, when Yorkshiremen of the 51st regiment picked white roses from bushes and wore them on their coats as tribute to their fallen comrades.
Despite it’s bloody history, the Yorkshire Rose has become an enduring symbol of the county, revered by Yorkshire-folk the world over and a reminder of our home and heritage. Symbolising our personal roots, love of history and business legacy, we proudly offer our representation of the Yorkshire Rose in your choice of precious metal.
In addition to the motif, another element which contributes to the desirability of the design is its adaptability: our Yorkshire Rose can be used for earrings, charms, neckwear, rings and wristwear. We can also add a touch of sparkle with your choice of precious stone as a centrepiece, or personalisation by engraving an initial on the reverse.
The Yorkshire Rose resonates with our customers far and wide, has been gifted all over the world. It remains one of our best-selling jewellery pieces to this day.
